Melanie and WandererSo, I started The Host only a few days ago and I have to say that Melanie and Wanderer are two of my favorite characters. I love Melanie's strength and how she defies and begins to grow inside her mind instead of fading away. Wanderer I like as a soul because she seems almost... to knowledgeable. Which is totally awesome in my opinion. But, that's just me! ^^

I was glad when wanderer dropped some of her "perfect soul" stuff and started thinking a little more human-like. I mean, she sounds like an amazing person/soul, but the whole anti-violence anti-lying oh-i-feel-so-bad would have really gotten on my nerves had she been really strict about it. And you can't help but feel for her as she's being treated so badly in the beginning.

yea the beginning was what really made me feel bad
but she is incredibly selfless even though she tries the whole time to stay alive she doesnt trample over n e one
and i think its awesome mel had the force to fight back and refuse to fade so she has my respect =]

I think wanderer is amazing...I like Mel too...but she can be selfish at times...which is fine I guess...but Wanderer is so giving...and nice...she was perfect...but then sometimes she had flaws...so it all evened out...=)

Yeah, I can understand Wanderer's point through most of it. I felt so bad with the whole "soul cutting thing" though. But sometimes she annoys me. She's too much like Bella for me. The thing that bugs me the most is how she won't tell Ian about what happened. She could've told him the gist of it. Like at the part where she says "I tried to let Mel out once, when
Kyle-" "When Kyle tried to kill you. Okay, fine. Don't tell me." That annoyed me.

Because she won't tell him. I think that Ian should understand what actually happened with his brother and her. I guess now it doesn't matter. It was just... idk, at the time I thought that she should tell him, or at least summarize what happened. Eventually, though, Ian probably guessed most of it, and then Kyle apologized so it doesn't matter at all any more. Whatever.  I just feel like, if you're going to love someone and be with them your entire life, you should not keep any secrets, and that you should be very open with the person. She should be able to trust that Ian won't kill his brother... after he's calmed down a bit, that is.

I was rereading parts of the book and I still feel real bad for Mel. Don't get me wrong, Wanderer showed real charicter by desideing to relesase her. I just feel more for Mel.

As I was reading the book, I have to admit that I HATED Wanderer... It wasn't until Mel and her became super close that I began to accept her. I think it was mostly because I had put myself in the position of Melanie, and having her body taken over was extremely annoying. Could you even imagine seeing something happen (such as Ian and Wanda kissing) and not be able to do anything about it?
In retrospect, though, I have to say that Wanderer was alright. She was the perfect example of selflessness and umm... yeah.
Melanie was my favorite, though! I LOVE how stubborn she is. How sarcastic she could be at times. I also love how she was able to break through Wanda's control and punch Jared in the face.

I agree! Mel is the one I was cheering for! Wanderer is cool for a parasite, but from her people's perspective probally crazyand a traitor. As far as selfless, well to reproduce they have to die. After she sees the cave dwellers as her family that part comes much easier for her then for Mel to want her to stay to help her family. Yeah, Mel is more selfless then Wanda in that respect.

I don't think there's anything remarkably special about either girl *hides from Ian and Jared*. And I hate Wanda's name. I really, honestly can not stand that name, lol. It makes me think of my cousin's fat grandma and that little Chinese girl from The Magic School Bus. You have no idea how many times I imagined that freaky little Asian when I was reading about Wanderer.

Oh my. I feel so sorry for you. Lucky for ME, I didn't think about that...or I would've hated her too.
Personally, Mel was good to fight to keep her own part of her mind and not succumb to her host, but it wasn't Wanda's fault she was there.
I think Wanda needs some credit because she realized what the hosts were doing wasn't right, and she found out something to do about it. And she was EXTREMELY sacrificing (willing to let herself die when she came out of Mel's body, and giving up her virtual immortality to be with Ian.) ((Even though I would've done that last one too. ))
She also endured the harshness that the humans showed her (at first) with dignity. I would've yelled at them for staring or something, I don't know.
